Study Finnish in a goal-oriented and efficient way. Eira High School for Adults offers a wide range of intensive Finnish language courses from levels A0 to B1.2.

Start your registration by taking a placement test. The test helps us place you in the right course level so you can get the most out of your studies.

Please note that most of our courses are online!

The academic year and studies begin on Monday, 24 August 2026.

How to apply

Courses are available at multiple levels, from beginner to more advanced.

You can start Finnish language studies in any study period. A separate application is required for each period.

Application steps

Register for the online placement test (1 June – 17 July 2026)
Complete the test online (31 July or 3 August 2026)
Choose a suitable course
- You will receive an email with available course options
- If no suitable course is available, you will be informed
Confirm your place by paying the course fee
- Course fee: €100 per course
- Payment must be made via the payment link sent by email.

Student selection criteria and the placement test

There are more applicants than available places for Finnish language courses at Eira High School for Adults. Therefore, student selections are made carefully to ensure that the courses best meet the students’ needs and language proficiency levels.

Finnish Language Placement Test – Instructions for Applicants

All new applicants must complete a placement test to determine the appropriate course level. Please note that completing the test does not guarantee a place in a course, as availability is limited.

What you need for the test:

A computer (online courses require a computer)
An internet connection (the test works in a standard web browser and does not require installing any software)
A Google account
A webcam and microphone (for the video task)
Speakers or headphones (for the dictation task)

Test content:

Reading a text on video
Writing task
Dictation task

Test duration:

The test is open from 10:00 to 20:00
Completing the test usually takes approximately 45–120 minutes
The test must be submitted before the deadline – late submissions will not be accepted

Important The purpose of the test is to determine your appropriate course level. It is important that your language skills are assessed honestly and accurately.

Selection Order

Students are admitted to each new study period in the following order:

Current students Priority is given to students who are already attending Finnish language courses at Eira Adult Upper Secondary School and are continuing their studies.

Former Eira students Students who have previously studied at Eira.

Applicants who have taken the placement test in a previous application round. Next, applicants are selected who have completed Eira’s placement test earlier but were not offered a place in the previous study period.

New applicants who have completed the placement test If places remain, they are offered to new applicants who have completed the placement test but have not previously studied at Eira.

Please note: You cannot be admitted to a course without a placement test result.

Other selection criteria

Suitability of the course to the applicant’s level.
Based on the results of the placement test, the applicant will be directed to a course that matches their language proficiency. Without a placement test, it is not possible to select a course.

Technical skills and study readiness.
Digital learning environments are used in the courses. The applicant must be able to use a computer and online platforms independently or with support.

Reasons for rejection

The applicant may not be admitted for the following reasons:

No suitable course level is available.
Based on the placement test, there is no course available that matches the applicant’s language proficiency.

The applicant would benefit from a slower-paced course.
According to the placement test, the applicant would be better suited to a slower-paced Finnish course. All Finnish language courses at Eira Adult Upper Secondary School are intensive.

Incomplete placement test.
Based on the placement test performance, the applicant does not have sufficient technical skills for distance learning, or has not completed all the required sections of the test.

Study place at another institution.
The applicant is already studying at another basic or upper secondary education institution (e.g. AIPE, upper secondary school, vocational institution). Eira Adult Upper Secondary School cannot admit applicants who already have a study place in another upper secondary institution. Studies in higher education are not a barrier to participating in Finnish language courses.

The applicant does not reside in Finland.
Based on the information provided or obtained, the applicant lives abroad. The courses at Eira High School for Adults are intended only for residents of Finland.

Who are the courses for?

Our Finnish language courses are intended for anyone who wants to improve their Finnish skills for everyday life, work, or further studies. You can start from the very beginning.

The courses are suitable for you if you:

have moved to Finland and want to learn Finnish
need Finnish for work or further education
have already studied Finnish and want to improve your skills
are looking for a flexible and efficient way to study
have good basic literacy using the Latin alphabet
have the necessary skills and equipment for real-time online learning (for online courses)

You can participate even if you do not yet have a residence permit or Finnish personal identity code.

Studying Finnish at Eira

Studying is flexible: courses are offered in the morning, daytime, and evening, with options for online, in-person, and hybrid learning. Courses mainly takes place online, making it easy to combine studies with work, family life, or other commitments. In-person classes are held at Iso Roobertinkatu 20–22 A, Helsinki.

Students are placed in suitable groups based on the placement test.

👉 English is used as a support language, especially at beginner level and in online teaching.

Study structure and progression

Course schedule and workload

Courses are offered at different times of the day:

Morning groups: 8:50–11:50 or 8:50–13:50
Evening groups: 17:10–20:00

Teaching usually takes place from Monday to Thursday. The number of lessons and weekly hours vary by course:

3–4 times a week: 20 hours / week (one course lasts one study period)
2 times a week: 10 hours / week (one course lasts two study periods)

Most courses are conducted as distance learning. In-person classes are held at Iso Roobertinkatu 20–22 A.

Fees and enrolment

Fees are paid before each study period. You only pay for the periods you actually attend.

If a course is full:

You will be notified by email
You will not be charged
You will be placed on a waiting list

Cancelling a course
If you cancel no later than 3 working days before the course starts, 50% of the fee will be charged. For later cancellations or if no cancellation is made, the full fee will be charged. Cancellations must be made by email: suomenkurssit@eira.fi
